ABSTRACT

How does emotion shape fieldnotes? Reflecting on my fieldnotes practice from my doctoral fieldwork studying gender and water in Cameroon, I develop a framework for thinking through the role of emotion in fieldnotes in three areas: 1) Fieldnotes as a space where researchers mediate emotion in the field; 2) The relationship between emotion and the mode of fieldnote production, specifically with attention to writing; and 3) Affect and fieldnotes audiencing. I argue that fieldnotes shape and are shaped by emotion in research, and I raise questions about how emotion affects reflexivity.
