ABSTRACT

Large research teams require coordination and supervision to ensure that the project is ethically and methodologically rigorous, while still attending to the research team members’ important emotions. This chapter describes the experiences of novice Lebanese student researchers who were part of a large team conducting research with Syrian refugee families. The project provided an opportunity for student researchers to meaningfully reflect on the process and document their experiences using three methods: (1) Padgett’s (2012) Interview Feedback Form (IFF), (2) interjecting their thoughts in the research transcripts, and (3) participating in a focus group discussion and individual follow-up interviews. As novice researchers, students may not have prioritized fieldnotes and instead may have been more comfortable sharing their reflections through group discussion and guided questions, particularly in the context of ongoing conflict. Our analysis suggests that multiple fieldnotes methods are needed to address the diversity of the research and the researchers.
