ABSTRACT

I discuss the creation of Silent Waves by Hazel Smith and myself, as an example of research-led practice. The research, which initiated the ideas for this piece, concerned framing, pauses, silent grooves (where a pulse seems to continue ineluctably even during virtual silence) and disjunctions in Miles Davis’ Shhh/Peaceful from the album In a Silent Way. The bulk of the chapter discusses this research, while a complementary section reveals how aspects of Silent Waves (both text and sound) flowed from this.
