ABSTRACT

Fragmentary approaches to ‘Aural Training’ have set the tone for almost 200 years. As an alternative, this chapter aims to focus on repertoire-based holistic multidimensional ‘Aural Education.’ Providing a bird’s-eye view of the development of the field while acknowledging advances in music psychological cognitive-based learning, the chapter concludes by discussing the application of ‘Ghost Scores’ as a way to combine holistic and meaningful fragments (extractions). Requiring the completion of blanked-out sections in a whole score, the focus is placed on contextual and comprehensive listening experiences.
