ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests different ways to link (international) political economy and social movement studies, focusing in particular on distinct ways to remedy the “strange disappearance of capitalism from social movement studies” (Goodwin and Hetland 2013). We will structure the chapter along scalar lines and suggest three areas for cross-fertilization: social movements within national systems of capitalism, a comparative approach to social movements within different systems of capitalism, and social movements within the international political economy. Among other things, we will argue that and elaborate how social movements are constitutive of and embedded in the struggles that continuously make and remake markets and other institutions
