ABSTRACT

This opening chapter begins with an overview of why this book is necessary now. While acknowledging the significant strides that have been made in Islamic education curricula, an argument is put forth at the outset that there remains a concerted recognition that curriculum renewal is needed and must be ongoing. The chapter then provides conceptual clarity on commonly used terms such as Islamic/Muslim studies/education that is necessary in appreciating the multiple ways in which Islamic education is and can be understood. Based on the multiple ways the Islamic education is understood, the chapter proposes 14 distinct “Curriculum Orientations” that characterize distinct approaches to Islamic education in school settings globally. These orientations will serve as useful entry points to academic researchers and school educators who seek to determine current curriculum commitments in relation to potential curriculum aspirations. The chapter closes with a description of how the book is structured identifying key areas of interest to potential readers.
