ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the foundation to understand how police services and their initial training are organized in Recruitment, Education and Careers in the Police countries. Most professional workers recognize the need for at least some off-the job learning. Professionals’ knowledge base and their education and training vary greatly between professional occupations in different countries. Policing is said to be one of the most complex and challenging jobs in any society. Considering the geopolitical changes that Europe has faced, it is no surprise that the role of police varies and that the situation regarding the European system of police education and training is diverse. The Scottish police was reorganized in 2013 with the merger of eight regional police forces, as well as the specialist services of the Scottish Police Service Authority, including the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency. Police education was connected to the Scottish Educational Qualification Framework with a stronger focus on theoretical reflection during the practical training.
