ABSTRACT

Men may fail for a long time to realize their own advantage, but the time comes when they are enlightened and act accordingly. The French have adopted the English constitution, and all the peoples of Europe will adopt it gradually, as they become sufficiently enlightened to appreciate its advantages. All the enthusiasm, the madness, the horrors of the French Revolution are paralleled in the English Revolution. The progress of enlightenment reveals the anomalies of the old social order, and makes the need of a new organization felt. The glamour fades; they hesitate in face of the sacrifices which, at a distance, appeared insignificant; they repent of their rash enthusiasm. It is possible to say with certainty that if there was a sixth term in the English revolution, there will be a similar sixth term, corresponding to it, in the French revolution.
