ABSTRACT

Traugott Müller was the primary designer for director Erwin Piscator in the 1920s and played a crucial role in advancing the use of film and projection onstage. He was thus a major contributor to the development of Epic Theatre. Though not the first person to incorporate projections into theatre productions, Müller was the one who developed a unified scenographic approach so that the entire mise en scène conveyed and reinforced the thematic ideas and motifs of the play. The resulting integration of media with live theatre became a significant component of twentieth-century theatre and a defining aspect of theatre in the twenty-first century.
