ABSTRACT

Sally Jacobs established her reputation as a set and costume designer with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s, especially in her work with Peter Brook on several of his landmark productions. She also designed notable opera productions for the Royal Opera House and the English National Opera as well as theatre productions with the Royal Court Theatre and several regional theatres in the United States. Her most notable designs were for the RSC productions of The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade and A Midsummer Night's Dream, both directed by Brook. The latter was especially memorable for its gleaming “white box” set.
