ABSTRACT
This chapter challenges normative approaches to the interview as an information extraction procedure and delineates principles for rethinking the interview as dialogical, joint activity. While the qualitative interview can be viewed as a formal exchange, our close analysis of interview transcripts from two distinct contexts illuminates the ways in which knowledge is co-constructed, rooted in the social relations between researchers and youth, and contingent upon specific qualities of mediation. We consider how a humanizing research framework prioritizes social and ethical relations, and orients toward the interview as an occasion for learning from young people’s meaning perspectives in and through co-presence.
