ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that researchers who utilize qualitative research methodologies to study vulnerable populations, sensitive topics, or who work with youth may be at risk for adverse effects such as experiencing stress (or overwhelming feelings) due to researcher vulnerability as a result of their engagement in research. The chapter presents a brief review of the extant research literature related to researcher vulnerability, describes the various ways in which a researcher can be positioned as vulnerable, and illustrates an example of researcher vulnerability. Further, strategies of self-care and recommendations for the training of novice researchers utilizing qualitative methodologies are offered.
