      ABSTRACT

To prepare the ground for theoretical advancement in the field of ageing and technology, this chapter discusses similarities and differences between theories from Age Studies (AS) and Science and Technology Studies (STS) that are applied when studying the ageing-and-technology nexus. To do so, we examine how theoretical and empirical work in AS and STS has framed ageing with technologies so far. First, we outline the pathways that theoretical discussions have taken in both disciplines to highlight how similarities and differences between their concepts have developed. Second, we juxtapose contemporary concepts of AS and STS and identify and discuss five intersections at which the similarities and differences between the two fields become apparent: (1) relationality, (2) materiality, (3) agency, (4) power and (5) critique. In an attempt to bring the two fields of research together, we end the chapter by outlining major questions that set the stage for the joint theorising of AS and STS that is explored in this book.
