ABSTRACT

The shipping industry is currently feeling the full impact of information and communications technology (ICT), a process described as digitalization. The market segment of short sea shipping (SSS) could greatly benefit from such technologies as a significant number of major drawbacks of SSS, pointed out by shippers, may be addressed by ICT. This paper describes current and future developments in the three main areas where digitalization may have an impact in the competitiveness of SSS: multimodal transport data sharing platforms, vessel traffic services and maritime single windows. The current scope, main types of services provided within each category and developments currently in progress are discussed. Examples of state-of-the-art electronic facilities currently in operation and relevant recent research work are presented. Conclusions are drawn regarding the possible impact of these developments in short sea shipping.
