ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an understanding of ethnic segregation and the conditions that create it, and to give a review of the discussions from the main chapters of the book. A general model for how to understand the causes and processes of ethnic segregation is developed, and the overall conclusions from Chapters 2–7 on how different factors and conditions in countries affect spatial concentration of ethnic minorities and their separation from the native majority are referenced. At the end of the introduction is made a discussion of to what extent and how welfare state systems in countries influence ethnic segregation based on Chapter 8. Initially a short summary is made on the extent of ethnic segregation in Europe.

I have chosen not to refer to sources in this chapter, which is a summary of the other chapters in the book. Instead I refer to the chapters where the main text with references is found.
