ABSTRACT

There has been a lack of critical commentary around the hosting of sports events and the problems they create. There has also been a lack of clarity over the significance of smaller sporting events and their complexity. This chapter introduces an event typology related to sporting events, highlighting the two elements which distinguish them as distinctive: the criteria used to identify the precise nature of a sporting event and their innate distinctiveness. The scope of sporting events is broad and currently lacks universal definitions given the range of sport event types ranging from parades, celebrations and exhibitions through to comprehensive events at different geographical scales from the community to hallmark event type.
