ABSTRACT

Supporters of our environmental well-being and climate—including cities, states, business, academia, the military, community-based organizations, and religious organizations—are awakening and mobilizing. The challenge of climate change goes beyond past efforts at collective institutional initiatives as seen in traditional public-private partnerships and the four Ps, public-private-philanthropic partnerships. Locally generated grassroots activities based on horizontal networks are educating their communities and gaining support from the business sector for climate and resiliency action. Business leaders are developing new types of social ventures based on finding shared economic gains that also support social and environmental goals, including climate. Corroborating the fact that lay people are ever more concerned about the impact of climate change, the panel generated probing conversations during the question-and-answer period, with audience members engaging in lively discussion well beyond its end. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
