ABSTRACT

The Green Man is an ancient, rich image of Nature. Just gazing at his form evokes a sense of primordial energy associated with the more-than-human world. Human lost the ability to creatively hold the opposites inherent in Nature, the most fundamental dyad being Nature’s duplex of Creation/Destruction. The motif of this primal dyad pervades the tales of old. The Green Knight is both terrifying and life-bestowing. The mother-witch grants and takes away at any moment. An academic exploration of the history of the Green Man, or a compilation of Green Man’s appearance throughout the world, are not sufficient to experience his living reality. There are several excellent resources on the Green Man, and all provide a deepening experience of him. However, most of these sources are rooted in the realm of space and time, not the imaginal, which is where depth psychology, especially the approach of Jung, becomes important.
