ABSTRACT

Considerations for the use of simulations and game-based assessments in large-scale, K–12 testing programs are discussed to shed light on the potential these innovations have for enhancing measurement in statewide testing of academic content standards. Technical and administrative requirements of large-scale assessment are described to define the innovation challenge of testing for federal accountability. Pathways for innovation and strategies for implementation involve collaboration between software developers, content experts, and measurement specialists, whether implementation is in response to specific federal funding streams or considered an aspect of continuous improvement at the state level. The idea of building games and simulations to the content and technical specifications of existing assessments rather than altering those specifications to fit existing games is advanced. Examples and illustrations are provided.
