ABSTRACT

The newspaper A Capital appeared a little before the first Portuguese republican regime (1910-1926) and it was published, with small interruptions, until 1926; after this moment there were more breaks until 1938. Deeply associated with the republican cause, it became, in the 1920s, part of the ‘Democratic Left’.

In this chapter I analyse this newspaper’s news reports and other texts about the Portuguese colonies in Asia, (India, Macau, and Timor) between 1910 and 1926, to evaluate the importance reserved to these colonies near Portuguese public opinion. This study also allows the verification of the themes associated with these spaces and their evolution along these years.
