ABSTRACT

The press is one of the most subtle of the many forms of propaganda, especially since its primary function is to inform. Against this background, the newspaper Jornal da Europa, which during the military dictatorship period had significant weight in the colonies, sought to combine propaganda and information with the emphasis on culture. It used the travel impressions, small essays and exemplary poems - on the overseas theme - to seduce and attract potential settlers to take the path leading to overseas.

The propaganda strategy, upheld by the Estado Novo, was one of its most important to maintain the power, and the magazine O Mundo Português (1934-1947) capitalised on the many lessons learned from Jornal da Europa.
