ABSTRACT

The press became a major political concern after the Revolution of 1820 in Portugal. With the end of the absolutist regime, the constitutional monarchy depended on the freedom of the press. A study in the second half of the nineteenth century shows us how impactful the press could be, as this chapter focuses on the impact of the Boletim e Annaes do Conselho Ultramarino on the Portuguese society. This a specialized periodic of governmental sponsorship, an official publication issued by the Portuguese Conselho Ultramarino that was published from 1854 to 1867. But, how did this periodical, devoted to publishing the archival documentation of the Portuguese Ministry of the Navy and Overseas, come to influence the public opinion?
