ABSTRACT

Human beings are designed to communicate, and we are born innately equipped with the potential to develop our own narratives as we experience the world around us and to create our own stories to tell, to connect us to others. In response to the children's deepening knowledge of narrative and their growing understanding of the possibilities for creating and co-creating stories, staff developed the use of story ribbons as a resource for each story, to extend thought, encourage discussion and develop imagination around each of the traditional tales. Deep knowledge of traditional tales combines with curiosity, imagination, open-mindedness and problem-solving skills and intertwines with play and 'reincorporation' to develop creativity. The literacy project facilitates equity and inclusion of all children: 2-year-olds, looked after and accommodated children, children with English as an additional language, children with additional support needs and highly able learners.
