ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the story of the longevity of a prop. It shows the journey taken and the positive effect of a story bag, which through the years has encouraged and, on occasion, ignited the imagination of children to develop their own stories. These have been spoken, dramatised and at times written down. In the 1970s nursery provision in Scotland was divided into day nursery provided by Social Work and Nursery Schools and classes provided by Education. There was little private provision other than nannies working closely with families. The interest taken by children was evident, with child-initiated drawings of owls and a dedicated area where the children could examine the fossils closely with magnifying glasses. This immediate connection with the puppet illustrates the power of props in storytelling.
