ABSTRACT

Understanding occupational health and safety is an important role for the legal nurse consultant (LNC). The LNC needs to be knowledgeable about the laws and regulations affecting this complex area of healthcare practice. Federal and state laws such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act were enacted to protect the health and safety of workers. Employers not in compliance may receive fines and citations depending on the severity of the violation. The role of the LNC can be enhanced by having familiarity with the scope of practice of the Occupational and Environmental Health Nurse. The knowledge of records that may exist to assist in the investigation and support of a case involving occupational safety and health issues is helpful to the discovery process.
