Introduction

This chapter provides an overview of the volume, situating the emergence of interest in critical beauty studies across a range of humanities and social science disciplines in relation to feminist and anti-racist social movements. It describes the organizing logic of the book and introduces each of its six sections: “Theorizing Beauty Politics,” “Competing Definitions of Beauty,” “Beauty Activism and Social Change,” “Body Work,” “Beauty and Labor,” and “Beauty and the Life Course.”
