ABSTRACT

After the First World War Ludwig Dehio published a great number of articles using newly discovered sources for the elucidation of Prussian-German history in the nineteenth century. At that time he was director of the Brandenburg-Prussian archives in Berlin-Dahlem. The victim of the demoniac character of power, however, is flung about in a turbulent storm by overpowering will-to-rule and amoral joy of battle. Inevitably, such demoniac character bursts out vigorously in that most comprehensive and violent of all struggles on earth, the struggle for hegemony. The major European war, which was expanded into a world war, came to pass. Only then did the transformation of our situation, so far just an impending danger, become frightful reality. The termination of earlier hegemonic wars established peace for generations. Characteristically, the great turn of events in Germany was brought to an end by a new turn of events in America.
