ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author decides that a few explanatory words about organisation might be useful and that audience might be interested to know that somebody who had had charge of an important part of re-education efforts thought about them in retrospect. There were a number of other reasons why Education Branch and Information Services Control saw little of one another. Schools are by their nature widely scattered, whereas printing-presses and radio stations tend to be confined to the larger towns. Public attitudes in Britain made use of some such phrase indispensable: public attitudes in Germany meant that its use was bound to give offence. Responsible people on the British side were from early on aware of the problems involved in the idea of re-education. But for them to have been too open in questioning its practicability would have played straight into the hands of those who were out simply to punish.
