ABSTRACT

Welt im Film was a newsreel produced jointly by the British and American occupying powers for compulsory screening in the cinemas licensed to operate in their respective zones and sectors of Germany and Berlin; a variant of the newsreel was produced for distribution on a similar basis in Austria and Vienna. Planning for Welt im Film began in London well before the end of the war. The impression so far offered of a steady development or evolution of Welt im Film is more than a little misleading. The staff of the American Information Control Division and the British Public Relations and Information Services Control Group do not appear to have attached much importance to film in general or to Welt im Film specifically. The body of evidence available on the reception of Welt im Film thus suggests that its potential use to allied information policy may have been underestimated by the makers of that policy.
