ABSTRACT

The main issue here was less the writing of music about COVID, than the use of music by people across the world. The chapter argues that precede this Afterword serve as both reminders of a world before COVID and as an invitation to imagine a post-COVID world. While it would be flippant to say the same about music, the making and use of music under COVID showed that it has to be much more about fulfilling a basic human need than it is about economic exploitation. However, lest we underestimate the importance of struggles within this arena, COVID has been another reminder of the power, as well as the limitations, of nation states, and it seems clear to me that music will have a continually important role to play in national politics. All of this has profound implications for the use of music in political campaigns, where pop may be consumed in particular ways.
