ABSTRACT

A precondition of the development of the code of the street is a specific spatial framework, which includes an increasing and spatially concentrated drug market, high crime rates, deindustrialization, demoralization and discrimination. In this regard, the street code approach brings social-structural, social-cultural, as well as human behavior together. The code of the street only occurs by the acquisition of street wisdom. However, the findings are limited to the Anglo-American context in particular, studies in other contexts, like the Netherlands, Germany, South Africa or Pakistan point out that the code of the street underlies culturally specific influences. The street is developed or shaped through a social shuffling processes on the street among peers in particular. In the same manner, children from decent families become familiar with the code of the street and learn the ability of code-switching or incorporate the code in their individual normative system.
