ABSTRACT

This chapter critically examines the effects of football training on healthy ageing. We first provide an overview of the physiological processes involved in ageing, and of the progressive impairment in the function of all organs and organ systems, which leads to a decline in health-related components, i.e. strength, cardiovascular fitness and body composition. Next, we examine and provide insight into the molecular (omics) modifications induced in muscle tissue by short- and long-term football training and their effects on healthy longevity. We also discuss the effects on key markers related to oxidative metabolism and healthy aging pathways in terms of metabolic non-communicable disease prevention.
