ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews recent euro area reform plans and discusses their consequences for Poland as a non-euro European Union (EU) member-state. It provides a discussion on Poland's euro area (EA) accession must not ignore the recent reform plans of the EA. The chapter focuses on the challenges that the deepening of European integration, in particular the newest reform proposals of EA, can create for the Polish economy. It demonstrates the rich context which needs to be taken into account while discussing future euro accession by Poland. Proposals regarding further EA integration may be affected by the ‘asymmetry between national sovereignty and common solidarity’. The creation of a Eurosystem of fiscal policy could be a move towards a more effective institutional set up, as currently fiscal policy making in the EA resembles a difficult balancing act between national and European interests.
