ABSTRACT

This chapter explores alternative interpretation of economic relations between Germany and Poland. It discusses key features defining the logic of dependency critically in order to show its strengths and also flaws. The chapter argues that despite of strong arguments for this logic there is enough space to question its coherence and durability. The dependency perspective does not come from a conceptual void. The problem of asymmetries and unequal power in international economic relations has been a real and well investigated phenomenon. Data on trade and Foreign Direct Investments seem to be the straightforward consequence of the asymmetry in innovations between Germany and Poland. If the deterministic and to some extent fatalist logic of dependency does reflect the complexity of the Polish – German economic relations, looking for a more nuanced approach might be helpful. The literature on capitalism regards Germany as a model distinct from liberal arrangements.
