ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies state aid policy in Poland as to its objectives and the types of public support offered to entrepreneurs in the period 2004–2016 and to assess its influence on the Polish economy over the analyzed periods: immediately after Poland’s accession to the European Union (EU), during the financial and economic crisis and in the years of recovery in the face of new challenges deriving from climate change and demand for innovation. It presents the main theoretical concepts dedicated to central government interventions in the market and their impact on the EU principles. The chapter focuses on regional state aid as the most popular interventionist instrument expected to improve investment attractiveness during and after the crisis. It also discusses the financial intervention toolkit available to companies and used to address new challenges and opportunities for Poland stemming from climate change and innovation.
