ABSTRACT

Veganism is a purist belief and practice that involves doing everything one can to ensure no harm comes to animals and the natural environment. This chapter explores species justice from the theory to what it looks like in action through internet activism using the example of live sheep export in WA. It examines the complexities of species justice and veganism and details a path towards species justice as the first step for social workers and activists everywhere. Anthropocentrism is also known as speciesism, which refers to the superiority of the human species and their control over nonhuman animals. This means that through the hierarchical binary of human versus other, all that falls under the “other” category is treated as an object devoid of sentience. Anthropocentrism is based on a hierarchical binary of human and animal, human and environment, or human and other.
