ABSTRACT

In the current atmosphere of growing cynicism, alienation and disenchantment, it is imperative that we see the significance of education in the nurturing of the self and its larger connection to the external environment. Within this context, this paper attempts to make an enquiry into the philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore, keeping his notion of the self at the centre at understanding the role of education in it; and tries to understand the concept of the self in the light of the human-nature relationship that Tagore elaborated on. According to Tagore, understanding of the self is rooted not in isolating the mind from the world and from the environment, but in developing the relationship between the individual and nature, and between the self and the world.
