ABSTRACT

Community-based initiatives (CBIs) have the potential to remedy the gaps left by public sectors in delivering public services. The sharing economy has increasingly become a highly commercialised type of CBI, and its relationship with government is the main interest of this chapter. We conducted two case studies with regard to two sharing economy initiatives in China, namely bike sharing and ridesharing. We observed that the relationships between government and the sharing economy initiatives in the two cases have experienced changes, mostly shifting from adversarial to coproduction. However, this coproduction relationship between them is not institutionalised, and it is anticipated that a genuine coproduction relationship will emerge in the future.
