ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of various ways in which families may contribute and react to substance use disorders of loved ones and significant others. Family models are considered sustaining models because family dynamics do not cause substance use disorders; however, family interactions often influence the course and progression of substance use disorders. This chapter provides descriptions of how substance use disorders impact on family members and couples, as well as the progression they experience. Specific family models are also discussed, including the Family Systems Model, the Family Disease Model, behavioral and cognitive-behavioral models and the Structural Family Model. Finally, descriptions of other family models are presented including CRAFT, Johnsonian intervention and multisystemic models which are often utilized when treating specific population (e.g. adolescents and young adults.)
