ABSTRACT
Chapter 6 offers an introduction and overview of the sociocultural model. In addition to key concepts and their definitions, this chapter also addresses sociocultural and environmental influences related to addiction. These influences include peer impact, family, community, race and ethnicity, and culture. Further, this chapter delves into poverty and racism. There is also information on “other” cultures. Additionally, this chapter focuses on lessons learned from the environment and application of the model to addiction counseling. Strengths, limitations, a case study and readings and resources complete the chapter.
