ABSTRACT

This chapter explains steps that might be considered to accelerate a project and claw back some or all of the excess time. As a project progresses and experience is gained some or all of the task duration estimates can be refined as experience is gained. The working days and hours, approach to work, rate of working and work expectations of different international cultures vary considerably. Applying measures to speed project tasks can increase the costs of those tasks their original estimates for a number of reasons. Funding for these additional costs might be possible by raiding the contingency sums provided in the original project cost estimates. Crashing is a resource-based methodology that involves throwing additional resources at a project to reduce the overall duration. Effective schedule reduction needs very proficient schedule management and intelligent decision-making based on the best scenario generated by testing various options.
