ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses the career of a typical professional project controls practitioner and the elements which that includes. He provides food for thought on the different approaches to take and ultimately help the reader to put their career firmly in their own hands. An approach to managing own career, which has become increasingly common in a project professional’s career is reflective practice. Reflective practice has long been an approach to continuous learning in professions such as healthcare and education. D. Schon gives a compelling insight into why the readers should consider reflective practice as part of our career development, declaring that ‘Professional knowledge involves both “technical rationality” and “professional artistry” (reflection in action)’. The project controls industry has nothing to fear in terms of job losses due to these technological advances, after all, project controls is the source of the data and job creation is more likely to increase due to the expanding remit of the role.
