ABSTRACT

A code might be allocated to identify an entire project, or the smallest item of data needed to manage a project. Take the code of accounts that is usually operated through the company’s cost and management accounting system. The person, department or committee responsible for designing project management coding systems should try to ensure that codes used in project costing and estimating are consistent with the code of accounts as far as possible. A code might be allocated to identify an entire project, or the smallest item of data needed to manage a project. Coding becomes more complicated when different companies working on the same project use their own individual systems. Resource codes are used particularly when scheduling and levelling project or whole organization resources by computer. Every project in the company’s programme or portfolio of projects will need its own identifying code. All information in the company’s database pertaining to each project can then be pinned to this code.
