ABSTRACT

Many different company organization structures exist in a wide range of complexities and configurations. Understanding the principles of organization structures and their effects on command and communications is important and essential for the effective implementation of project controls. Introducing more layers of junior managers would cause the organization to become more vertical, lessening the load on each manager but lengthening communication and reporting channels and increasing the company’s overhead salary burden. A project coordinator has to rely on the line managers to get things done, and can only prompt them or seek their support to keep the project on track. Project managers can dictate priorities and sometimes even allocate work to individual staff. The functional managers ensure technical excellence within their particular specialities, are responsible for professional engineering standards and generally manage the career progressions of their staff.
