ABSTRACT
In her essay Klementyna Suchanow examines the rather complex publication history of Gombrowicz’s works in the European market. Based on a rich archival source of the author’s correspondence with editors, she tells us the story of his editorial adventures with emphasis on France and the Anglo-Saxon countries. Extensive correspondence between Gombrowicz and Jerzy Giedroyc, the Polish editor of Gombrowicz’s works and publisher of the Paris-based Polish monthly Kultura, serves as a basis for Suchanow’s narrative of Gombrowicz’s publishing adventures in the French market. English language editors, particularly American publishers, and references to episodes of his publication history in Argentina and Spain are included in this fascinating narrative which reflects the policies and politics that surrounded the publication of Gombrowicz’s works.
