ABSTRACT
Less well known than Gombrowicz’s Argentine translation of Ferdydurke is his translation of Ślub, with Alejandro Rússovich, into Spanish. Gombrowicz began working on the translation in Buenos Aires during the war and it was published first in Spanish as El Casamiento in 1948 before appearing in Polish in 1953 as Ślub (The Wedding). In her article, Bożena Anna Zaboklicka Zakwaska suggests that rather than a “faithful reflection” of the “original” Polish Ślub, Gombrowicz’s Spanish El Casamiento is a form of “rewriting” or, using André Lefevere’s terminology, Gombrowicz’s El Casamiento is a “refraction” rather than “reflection” of the Polish Ślub.
