ABSTRACT

Worldwide, the phenomenon of internal displacement by disasters shows an increasing trend; this situation is particularly relevant for African countries, where the effects of disasters related to climate change have shown a greater impact in recent decades. This chapter presents an analysis of the phenomenon of internal displacement due to disaster situations based on the collection and analysis of official data on trends in climate change and the incidence of disasters in the African continent. Between 2000 and 2019, around 1,143 disaster events occurred in Africa, of which, 90% were caused by floods, droughts, and storms; inflicting more than 46,000 deaths and affecting more than 337 million people. Although there are strategic governance frameworks for protecting the rights and guarantees of the affected people, that is not enough; work must be done on risk reduction strategies to reduce the number of displaced people in the most vulnerable countries of the continent.
