ABSTRACT
Chapter 8 is on Karl Marx’s Capital, Volume 1. A Critique of Political Economy. Steve Tombs reflects on the impact of the concepts, insights, and analytical originality in this leading work and proposes that the key to understanding that mitigating the destructive effects of capitalism will not be achieved through law, regulation, and enforcement, instead through the collective struggles of people to secure the end of the corporate form and capitalism itself. He argues that it remains the case, on the basis of Marx’s concepts and analysis bequeathed to us through Capital, that the regulation of health and safety within workplaces regulation is always, even if only in the last instance, necessarily a matter of class conflict.
