ABSTRACT

This chapter will start by exploring the links between trauma and sexual interest. The psychological mechanisms linking different kinds of trauma and risk propensity will be examined. The developmental contexts of sexual interests will be explored as a critical factor in understanding the nature of sexual interest. Consideration will then be given to how trauma triggers of different kinds can be linked with sequences of events leading up to offending and/or offence paralleling behaviour. Offence paralleling behaviour will be examined as one approach to monitoring ongoing offence related sexual interest. The capacity to self-regulate sexual interest in a pro-social manner will be explored both in terms of managing trauma triggers and in terms of managing sexual arousal.
