ABSTRACT

This chapter will describe an Australian approach to treating sexual deviance issues within a therapeutic environment with specific regard to the issues relating to treating this area for Australian Aboriginal sex offenders. The basis of the approach is to assist sex offenders to learn a small number of skills that can be used for all treatment risk areas. In so doing, there is a focus on healthy relationships and sexuality and a limited need for specific treatment exercises relating to sexual deviance. This treatment approach is provided in preparatory groups, then within residential and non-residential sex offender treatment groups, and then is continued through custodial and community-based maintenance sessions to assist offenders learn and practice these skills across time and context. Specific strategies and exercises are described that are used for Aboriginal sex offenders.
